The Weather

The Weather

There are no free taxi
rides here
there will be climate
changes along the way.
We will learn to shelter from the rain beneath
the same umbrella,
brace ourselves
from the gales,
but let us always
walk together
through the bright
seasonal days
of the sun
under the one
colourful parasol.

Car In The Paddock

Car In The Paddock

The earth worms are
crawling out of
the dash board
I am clutching them
pulling out clumps
some are breaking in half
on the grass.
A queen bee passes
through the air-con
from the abandoned
honeycomb.
I've got to get out of here
the timer is ticking
I can see beautiful
bands of rainbow blue
siphon down
the smouldering
steel manifold
dripping down the
fragile stems of
wild flowers
the smoking blades
of grass
a green fuse
In the combustible hue.

LEST WE FORGET 1916

LEST WE FORGET (1916)

I was asked if I could
write a contemporary
Anzac poem
without the classic words about
Poppies and Flanders fields.
Not knowing
anything much
about the war machine
religion and politics.
Even so religion
was ingrained
into my school days particularly around
Christmas.
These days I choose to
ignore religion completely.
That's right.
I choose to live with my
children without religion.
I tell them
choice
is my religion,
and if we choose to love and ignore religion
we still can not be guaranteed
to be safe in this world,
and not
be harmed in the
wrong timings in
the religious killing fields
all
around us.

Lest We Forget

Lest we forget (1916)

I was asked if I could
write a contemporary
Anzac poem
without
Poppies or Flanders.
Not knowing
anything much
about
the war machine
religion and politics.
I just live with my
children today in
the killing fields all
around us.

A Game Of Words

A Game of Words

First the words
started well from
the mid-field position
punctuation proving to be a strong opposition.
Showing good forward play
the syllables are tackled in mid-flow by a comma, the letters recover quickly only to be fouled again, and
abruptly come to a full stop.
After a flowing run along the line
in the dying minutes of extra time the letters are taken down.
The penalty is awarded
the question mark is given the red card and is sent off.
The Captain with a capital letter
takes a shot at the verse
it bends right over the line
and scores a rhyme.
After the match
the adjectives described
the atmosphere as electric
with a cheer and a roar.

Conversation with a reluctant non-smoker

Conversation With A
Reluctant Non-Smoker

Have you given up the
smokes yet bro?
I used to be a forty a day man
not now days
can't even afford
to kill my self,
and you gotta die of something
aye bro?
At least I'd die happy.
It's not as if I feel any better
after going cold turkey
to tell you the truth
I feel bloody miserable
I could murder a smoke right now,
and you know the time
I really miss having
a smoke the most?
is straight after
a slap up feed
of fish & chips
and a strong cup of tea.
Now days bro
it's not like it used to be
with everything that's going on in
the world, nah!
it's not a patch on
the good old days bro.

The needle novels
define you
the garment removed
uncovers
the epidermis
of all your truths.
